James "Mac" Hunter
AWDA Board Chairman

Celebrating over a decade of excellence, the Atlanta workforce Development Agency (AWDA) has responded to the employment and developmental needs of our city. 2009-2010 proved to be a banner year for AWDA. In addition to continuing our signature programs, AWDA has stewarded investments in Atlanta’s workforce and the returns have been monumental. In lieu of rising unemployment and significant increases in poverty permeating our global and local economy, AWDA continues to demonstrate its commitment to the well-being of Atlanta and has taken bold actions to mitigate effects of the recession on its residents and businesses.

Through accessible supportive services and quality job training programs as well as diverse educational opportunities, the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency is integral to transitioning a prepared workforce to work. Though we have made significant accomplishments, our board’s primary challenge will be the shortage of qualified workers. We estimate that by 2014 Atlanta will need 200,000 more workers to sustain its infrastructure.

Therefore, high school drop-out rates must be reduced and adults without high school education must be given a chance to earn a GED. Our board and AWDA staff will re-focus efforts in 2011 by continuing to assist ex-offenders, TANF recipients and those with disabilities by providing special training and placement assistance yielding productive workers. Our strategic plan calls for a closer alignment with area educational institutions, governmental agencies and the business community to create effective results through common goals. Our plans also emphasize workforce systems and collaboratives with small businesses and entrepreneurs. In addition, we will emphasize training for the manufacturing sector and maintain our ongoing focus in building Atlanta’s workforce.

Please join us in developing a skilled workforce providing significant opportunities for our community. Our collective commitment will serve the best interests of greater Atlanta.
