Vice President of Software Development

Position No. 1         Summary

The vice president of software development reports to the CTO or CEO and works closely with other functional leaders in the company, including those in finance, sales, and marketing. The vice president of software development is responsible for all of the company’s product development activities including understanding and working with the code base.
Proximus Mobility is looking for senior leaders that can develop and manage a development team locally and through outsourcing to help enhance a rapidly growing location based proximity marketing platform.  Currently we are a growing, well funded company that is looking for development leadership that understands our direction and focus and can influence all parts of our technology. We are looking for a person that understands Agile and Extreme development models and can get stuff done on a weekly basis.
Proximus Mobility, headquartered in Atlanta, GA., is the leading proximity marketing solution, based in the US and is expanding the platform and company rapidly.  The company mission is to revolutionize how people and brands interact with each other via location based proximity marketing and mobile solutions and services by creating a better connection between consumers and customer-rated businesses by completing the value chain.

Responsibilities

  • Develop strategic planning for and direction and control of product development activities.
  • Provide technical direction and guidance, as well as hands-on project management and development.
  • Ensure the optimal application of technology and engineering resources to meet product development and/or customer
  • Overseeing the development of complete functional requirements, per the product and/or marketing requirements.
  • Ensure that the product is fully and correctly defined and documented.
  • Hire and direct staff of group members and developers to acquire necessary resources and plan to meet scheduled commitments.
  • Ensure implementation of formal processes to support the product development process.
  • Provide an accurate development and technology infrastructure budget so costs and development cycles are adequately managed.

Experience and Skills 

  • Strong operational and project management skills.
  • Strong and current development skills.
  • Demonstrated team building and leadership skills.
  • Solid understanding of software development technical issues/needs, financial, sales, and marketing as related to product design and development.
  • At least 10 years software development experience.
  • 5 years of Software architecting experience
  • BS in Software Development or Computer Science required; Masters preferred.
  • Concentrated Internet focused Java J2EE, J2SE development experience at all parts of the stack.
  • This person will be familiar with a LAMP stack and Java.  The Proximus solution utilizes a Linux hardware component with a Web Application built in Grails.
  • Ability to help advance design; model solutions; be a critical thinker and contributor in the give-and-take of Agile development.  Use of Rally and Jira.
  • Ability to mentor less experienced programmers and interns, and to work hand-in-hand with experts from product development, marketing, software test and other collaboration partners
  • Manage inputs from other people using solid project management skills to ensure on-time delivery of all software components.
  • Ability to think, contribute and be accountable in a fast paced dynamic team environment with weekly small releases.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and good sense of humor.
  • Ability to understand abstract problems and provide innovative solutions.
  • Solid understanding of OO analysis, design and implementation using very solid Java language skills.
  • Servlet Container or Application Server experience.
  • MySQL , JDBC
  • Apache Struts
  • Spring/MVC or other similar frameworks
  • Agile XP
  • Advanced experience with Debian and Ubuntu Linux, SSH, Command Prompt interfaces; embedded systems
  • Exposure and some experience in Grails, Groovy, and PHP.
  • Mobile experience preferred but not required.

  • Manage inputs from other people using solid project management skills to ensure on-time delivery of all software components.
