AWDA client Yolanda Ross has been coming to the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency for 2 weeks. Referred through City of Refuge for employment and career counseling, Ross began meeting with a counselor, attending job fairs, and enrolled in a Computer Literacy class.
AWDA’s Computer Literacy class teaches students the basics of how to use a computer to search for employment opportunities and how to create a resume that is attractive to employers. “When applying for any job, you need a resume that is not just based on what you do, but what you know,” said Ralph Dickerson, AWDA Computer Teacher.
Having been unsuccessful in gaining employment during her first weeks at AWDA, Ross decided that her resume needed to be upgraded. With the assistance of Dickerson and her Counselor Jennifer Moore, Ross was able to re-word her resume to reflect her experience and skills in the security industry.
Ross has since become employed with Murray Guard Security. She is thankful for the assistance she received and is excited to begin her new job. “This program has made me realize that if you really want to work, there are jobs. If you apply your mind and put forth the effort, you will see,” said Ross.
City of Refuge offers both life saving resources and life building tools to individuals and families in Atlanta who are living on the margin. With programs that span multiple areas of need – from food, clothing, and shelter, to job training, placement, housing, life skills, and transportation, their goal is to provide the best possible opportunities for success to those who are willing to work hard to change their lives
