New Beginnings . . .

      June 26, 2007

The New Beginnings program is providing job search support and direction to individuals who have been identified as long-term homeless. AWDA’s mission is to assist these participants in jump starting their journey back into the workforce. Individuals work closely with a Career Advisor to develop an Individualized Employment Plan (IEP) in preparation for employment. The plan includes basic skills and career interest assessments, ongoing counseling and coaching, work experience, occupational training, and job placement assistance.

“When we focus on changing the way we look at the world, the world around us changes. I believe everyone needs a little support especially while going through difficult times. Helping people focus on their strengths is the key. Most of my customers come in with strong survival skills from living in challenging situations; however, they may not be job ready. We prepare them to go to interviews and obtain employment. The ultimate goal is to empower them to become independent with employment and housing,” said Jennifer Moore, New Beginnings Project Manager.

New Beginnings Success Story . . .

Laura Cooper was enrolled in the New Beginnings program on May 21st 2007. “At first I thought it wasn't going to have any effect on me, but I was willing to try and see what good I could make out of it. As time went by, I realized I was getting a lot of things done. I had a resume, learned how to use a computer, met with an EarnBenefits representative for financial assistance and also met with the Georgia Department of Labor.” After a short time in the program, Ms. Cooper was hired by Arby’s, negotiating her salary based on her employment history and obtained a second job with the Comfort Inn after offering to clean a room to demonstrate her skills. While working at Arby’s and the Comfort Inn, Laurie is also in school to obtain her GED.

"This New Beginnings program changed my life tremendously. I couldn't have made it this far without this program." Ms. Cooper would like to thank AWDA staff members Jennifer Moore and Timi Ogunmekan for helping to make it all possible.

Since launching in February 2007, over 60 individuals have entered the New Beginnings program. To date, 20 have already secured employment. To be eligible for employment, individuals must have a referral from a transitional homes case manager. Criteria for participation also include having been homeless for more than a year, having secured housing with a partner agency, and willing to obtain employment.
