The Atlanta Workforce Development Agency celebrated the graduation of thirteen participants in the Seagram’s Gin Pursuit of Excellence program on Tuesday.
Mayor Franklin was the keynote speaker at the graduation reception where each participant received a certificate of completion and was awarded a $500 stipend. One outstanding participant, Jairus Glenn received a check for $2,500 and gift card to purchase a new career-focused wardrobe for his outstanding success in the program.
The Seagram’s Gin Pursuit of Excellence program was a new mentoring and job training initiative to support the fight against joblessness and unemployment among African American men in Atlanta and Chicago. The Atlanta Workforce Development Agency launched the Atlanta program on January 28 and ended on February 26. The program consisted of an intense, four-week training “Institute” that included the participation of 13 promising men ranging in age from 25-32 in each city. The program paired participants with successful and inspiring individuals who overcame difficulties and obstacles to pursue their own paths to excellence.
“The Atlanta Workforce Development Agency and The Seagram’s Gin Company focused on a major issue in the United Sates, the unemployment rate of young African American males, and have proved that all it takes is a little time and attention to prepare these young men for success in Corporate America,” said Mayor Franklin. “Through mentoring and guidance from the Atlanta community, these young men have had the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and will excel as future heads of corporations, entrepreneurs, and civic leaders.”
All thirteen participants are currently receiving job placement and/or technical training through the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency’s employment and training programs.
